How Solar works

Solar energy is harnessed using photovoltaic (PV) cells, commonly known as solar cells, which convert sunlight into electricity. The process involves several steps:

Photovoltaic Cells:

  • Solar panels are made up of individual photovoltaic cells, usually made from semiconductor materials such as silicon. When sunlight hits these cells, it excites electrons in the semiconductor, creating an electric current.

Generation of Direct Current (DC):

  • The excited electrons create a flow of electricity in the form of direct current (DC). However, most of our appliances and the electricity grid operate on alternating current (AC).

Inverter Conversion:

  • The DC electricity produced by the solar panels is fed into an inverter, which converts it into AC electricity. This is done because AC electricity is more suitable for long-distance transmission and for powering most household and industrial devices.

Utility Grid Connection (Optional):

  • The generated electricity can either be used on-site, stored in batteries for later use, or fed back into the utility grid. If connected to the grid, excess electricity can be supplied to the grid, and the user may receive credits or compensation for the surplus energy.

Usage and Storage:

  • The converted AC electricity is then used to power electrical appliances and devices in your home or business. Additionally, energy storage systems, such as batteries, can store excess electricity generated during sunny periods for use during cloudy days or nighttime.

Monitoring and Control:

  • Solar power systems often include monitoring and control systems that allow users to track energy production, monitor system health, and optimize energy usage.

It's important to note that the efficiency of solar panels can vary based on factors such as sunlight intensity, duration, and angle of incidence. As technology advances, solar panels continue to become more efficient, affordable, and accessible, contributing to the widespread adoption of solar energy as a sustainable power source.
